Synopsis

Following the collaborative process of the band Mumford & Sons with an esteemed collection of musical partners during their 2016 tour of South Africa. Inspired by their first trek through the territory, and the unprecedented excitement from their South African fans, the band was moved to record five new songs with artists Baaba Maal, Mamadou Sarr, The Very Best, and Beatenberg. The blending of ideas and musical styles from Senegal, Sweden, Malawi, Cape Town, and London resulted in their acclaimed Johannesburg mini-album, recorded in just two days and released globally in June 2016.

By the early 1980s, after two decades of violence and unrest, the situation in Northern Ireland took a sudden and profound turn inside the infamous Maze Prison. Seeking the right to be treated as political prisoners rather than common criminals, Irish Republicans led by Bobby Sands began a prison hunger strike that would draw international attention to the conflict. Out of the imagination of acclaimed artist-filmmaker Henry Coombes comes Albert, an eccentric, aging painter doubling as an unconventional, Jung-inspired psychotherapist. When Albert’s friend asks him to counsel her lethargic grandson Ben, whose ongoing boyfriend problems are rapidly fueling an already deep depression, their subsequent therapy sessions reveal as much about Albert as they do about the troubled young man. After a visit to his studio by his chain-smoking tea swilling mate Marcella, Albert agrees to just one therapy session with the troubled Ben unsure as he is as to how he can help him... this quickly becomes extended however as Ben begins to see the benefits of his engagement with the older man. Things take a turn howvere when Ben starts to question Alberts won behaviour, and consequently the methods by which Albert is driving him. Meanwhile Alberts own behaviour becomes more outrageous as he behaves with more excess and immaturity than the boy he is trying to help! Coombes’ debut feature is a witty, perceptive study of social mores, sexual excess and the bizarre, symbiotic relationship between doctor and patient; teacher and pupil; artist and muse.

Unfolding from this scenario, the film weaves verbatim testament into folk operatic form with the Ivy House itself, embodied and imagined as a central character and inhabited by the memories of the generations who have passed through its doors. Cairo cardiologist Bassem Youssef ('the Egyptian Jon Stewart') quit surgery to front the hugely popular TV satire Al Bernameg (The Show) amid the country’s turbulent Arab Spring-led political upheavals. Youssef ultimately fell foul of government crackdowns. His programme was cancelled and he was forced to flee the country with his family.
