Synopsis

After decades of lies, resentments and stolen identities, a Muslim mother confronts her drag queen son for her long overdue moment in the spotlight. Mother's husband and Son's father has just died. Mother is losing everything; her house, her glamour, her visibility. Son is profiting from grief; a drag queen who wins the applause his mother has never received. Whilst he has the spotlight, she is erased. He exaggerates stories of his mother, bartering in Islamophobic tropes to win white peoples’ sympathy. Her life is being re-written by her son – and he does it dressed as her. Like Medea before her, Mother decides to claim what is hers – her voice, her identity, her story, her trauma. Synopsis

When six Palestinian comedians hit the road to tour a stand-up show across Palestine and Israel, their search for humour amidst the injustice of everyday Palestinian life becomes a plea for humanity in the face of brutal war. There are no comedy clubs - or even a tradition of stand-up comedy - in Palestine. The country is also carved up by walls, fences and checkpoints that create divisions in culture and quality of life between towns. As such, developing a comedy show that can speak to these very different audiences is a herculean task. Despite the cultural and security challenges of going on tour, the five Palestinian comedians and their British director manage to cross checkpoints and borders to perform in theatres in Palestine and Israel. Audiences flock to the shows and the tour gains momentum through increasing public demand. Word spreads internationally and they are invited to London for a series of gigs starting, tragically, on October 7th, 2023, just as war breaks out at home. Suddenly, the mission to connect audiences with thoughtful humanity becomes an existential imperative. This is a story about a man who threw a party, which birthed a globally renowned event, which led to a film, which led to a lawsuit, which led to a legacy. Founded in 1972 by sculptor Andrew Logan, The Alternative Miss World is a celebration of transformation and unorthodox beauty. Starting as makeshift private parties held in his artist studio in an old jigsaw factory, the event married the Miss World competition with Crufts dog show, all with a sense of joy and humour. An instant smash hit, early judges and competitors included cultural legends like David Hockney, Derek Jarman, Zandra Rhodes and Leigh Bowery. 1978 saw them take the party public, hiring a big-top tent on Clapham Common for a circus themed extravaganza, hosted by drag icon Divine. A film about the night premiered at Cannes in 1980, and was meant to make it’s London debut on the same evening as the Miss World event. We all know a Jeanine: 40’s, childless, partnerless, wondering not just, “How did I get here?” (that’s the easy question) but “Where next?” and, more importantly, “Who with?” Jeanine’s is a simple goal: She wants someone to say her name in the dark. So a husband, i.e. someone contractually obliged to be with her, seems like the answer. Which is how Jeanine came to be here in a wedding dress, beside an A-road on a rainy day, holding a sign that says, ‘MARRY ME’. Problem is, the various men who stop and talk to her have their own agendas (not all of them honourable). Then a car pulls in and out fall two drunk women: hen party sashes, gins in tins and a jilted bride-to-be who’s the angriest woman to ever draw breath. Rival bride Jeanine seems the ideal target for her fury. Until Jeanine realises how to unite them all in their various frustrations...
