Synopsis

The film is a love letter to the joys and pleasures of champagne and English sparkling wine and explores British connections to famous champagne houses such as Pol Roger (Winston Churchill famously drank over 40,000 bottles in his lifetime), Bollinger (appearing in 15 James Bond/007 movies), as well as Piper-Heidsieck (Marilyn Monroe's favourite), Taittinger, JAY-Z’s Armand de Brignac, Veuve Clicquot and exclusive access to The Queen's vineyard at Windsor and vineyards in the south of England.

Synopsis

Surveilled is a study in psychological manipulation and the perception of justice. Joe Brooke has dark interests. As well as working under the radar for low-level criminals as a surveillance operative, he also has a fascination with serial killers - his bookshelf is filled with biographies on the most notorious murderers of modern times. Ironically, however, Joe’s hometown of Clairmont is the home of the country’s latest serial killer. Three local women have been brutally murdered by an attacker dubbed The Clairmont Murderer, a copycat killer who re-enacts the sickening murders depicted in a series of violent crime novels, the fanatical popularity of which is sweeping through the country. Having recently watched a TV crime show highlighting the case, Joe finds himself embroiled in the world of The Clairmont Murderer when he witnesses some disturbing behaviour in the course of his work.

Some time after the death of their mother, two sisters Phoebe and Dot, both performance artists, have returned to their family home on the Isle of Wight, a large house crammed full of Edwardian bohemian memorabilia and accumulated family clutter. Before selling the house, they are working on a site specific piece which will reflect their troubled childhood memories and their mother’s work as a composer; she wrote music for both pianola and music box which included songs using the words of the Victorian poet, Mary Coleridge whose poem 'A Clever Woman' becomes the title of the film. The action takes place over one day when the sisters’ producer/curator , Monica comes to visit. With them all is Tom, a young man who has been house-sitting; he is also an accomplished musician and the sisters have started to get him involved in their project. As the day progresses the sisters rehearse some of their mother songs and work on dramatising various aspects of her life including her complicated marriage and serial infidelity; this produces a heightened and haunting atmosphere which, coupled with an unexpected connection between Tom and Monica, leads to dramatic revelations and an explosive and poignant conclusion.
